Life after Work

Krautmaking

After a delicious dinner of kadhai paneer (yummy indian dish with bell peppers and indian cheese) the Mister and I cut, shredded, and packed our crock with 9 cabbage heads. Not that I want to blow my horn or something, but I’m quite the virtuoso on the mandolin slicer. I can’t believe that I tried to talk John out of getting one years ago. It since has become my best kitchen tool friend over weeks, nay months, of apple ring slicing.

Now we only have to wait about 6 weeks until the sauerkraut is ready. Hooray for the cool season, because we can’t make kraut in Summer: the hot temperatures would make the kraut ferment too fast and spoil. I have considered bringing the crock into the office and have it do its thing in the well-tempered back stairwell where seemingly nobody ever goes, but so far haven’t worked up the nerve. Maybe next Summer!?

From frog to snail

Our old IKEA snail bathroom rug has been falling apart for a while, so we picked up a new froggy one at CostPlus yesterday. I didn’t realize that this critter has some kind of rash or freckles, but, oh well, it is cute and soft.

My handspun!

My Own Handspun from Kansas

I’ve been meaning to post something about Yarn School. John and I spent a few days in Harveyville, KS where I attended a workshop for spinning with a bunch of really interesting women and had loads of fun. This is one of the skeins that I dyed and spun myself. I washed it, finally, last night and took this photo in the morning on our balcony. Dyeing and spinning is way too much fun and if all goes well, I’ll have my own wheel next month.

No more pain

Back pain from our old mattress, that is. I’ve been mentioning this to the Mister for quite some time, but only recently, since his sleeping patterns improved, had he noticed it, too. Our custom-made mattress, made by the Futon Favorite folks, arrived yesterday and is wonderful! Finally a morning without knots in the neck and shoulders. Here is a view into the inside of the mattress, before the cover was sewn up:

Mostly work and not a lot of play

Somehow this Sunday just slid right through my fingers. I worked on a paper for school for hours but because I had such a hard time with it I kept distracting myself from it which wasted some time. Having a headache didn’t make it any easier either. This one is about the movie “Fifth Element,” the last paper for this class, and at least I have a full length draft now, yay!

Eventually, John and I took a drive to the Futon Shop to test-drive our new mattress and get something to eat. Back home I spent some time on work-stuff which left me frustrated after some initial success. This is it, I’m just going to kick back, pull out the crochet stuff, watch a video (non-school related), and hopefully go to bed early to rest my achey head.

Chak De!

For the first time in we can’t remember we drove to Tempe for a hindi film. We saw “Chak De India” with Sharukh Khan, Bollywood heart throb. This film is located somewhere between “Hoosiers” and “A League of Their Own” but set in India and centering around girls playing field hockey (Chak De means “Go!” in this context). It was pretty good, with a strong positive message.

Hello world!

I left the default headline for my first post, because it is fitting. This is my first attempt at blogging, not really for the world but mostly for myself, as an exercise in keeping track of my time and experiences. Setting this baby up was embarassingly easy! After signing up for my site at bluehost.com all I had to do was use their nifty control panel to download and install WordPress.

The most difficult part was actually to decide on an interim theme that will tide me over until I have figured out how to customize a theme with a personal image and color selection, something I don’t feel like tackling this weekend. Too much to do, so little time.

Anyway, I’m excited about getting this going finally. It might take a while until I figure out how to change all of the lorem ipsem stuff, but who cares, it is just me here anyway, right?
